Washington, D.C.

Unit 11-22.

Rebecca spent the rest of the day in her office, doing her best to deflect Dean’s sarcasm. Her fellow agent seemed intent on pressing every button she had. She knew she was partially at fault since she almost always responded in a way that encouraged more of his bad behavior. They were like rival siblings who couldn’t stand to be at the dinner table.

Rebecca conducted an autopsy on the latest victim. Her internal organs were burnt like the others. She photographed the partial markings, copying the photographs to her computer and overlaying them with the others on the large screen. It was as she’d predicted. The symbol for the fallen angel was complete.

Dean had brought up an interesting question at the crime scene. What did this mean now that the symbol for Ipos was drawn in full? Rebecca didn’t know if it was just some sick calling card or if it was part of a bigger plan, perhaps some dark ritual that meant things were about to get even worse.

Dean had been correct when he’d said their unit had never been up against a Watcher. Werewolves, vampires, and shapeshifters were bad enough. Now she had to deal with an adversary that was from another dimension, and she had no idea where to even start.

Rebecca checked the time on her computer screen. It was eight o-clock in the evening. There was a good chance Damiano wouldn’t be at his club yet. If not, she could probably find him at his apartment, but that was the last place she wanted to go.

The apartment would be teeming with vampires, and she knew she’d never be able to hold her anger in check. The last thing she needed, though, was to piss off a dozen or more bloodsuckers and have to fight her way out of there. She was good, but probably not that good.

Rebecca went into the restroom. She checked herself in the mirror. She was dressed in her normal work attire of a t-shirt, leather pants, and long dark coat. It wasn’t exactly the usual clothing for the Underground, but she didn’t want to send the wrong message by changing into a dress or something else more formal. This was going to be a business meeting, nothing more.

Dean had already left for the evening. He’d told her he had some leads to chase. It was about as vague a statement as he could have made, but she hadn’t bothered to ask him to elaborate. She knew Dean would have her back if the shit ever hit the fan, but that didn’t stop her from longing for team members who took the work as seriously as she did.

Rebecca pulled her phone out of her coat pocket and ordered a car. She had her own, but parking was terrible around the nightclub. There was also the fact she’d probably have to consume several drinks before she’d get the vampire king to talk.

The Underground was just starting to pick up by the time the car service dropped her off.
